Donor Registration

2 min read

Since 2020, the new donor law applies in the Netherlands. If you have not recorded a choice, you are automatically registered as "no objection to donation". It is important to make a conscious choice yourself and record it.

How to register?

You can register your donor choice via the Donor Register at donorregister.nl. You can also call or send a form. Registration is free and can be changed at any time.

What choices do you have?

You can choose from four options: (1) Yes, I give permission for organ and tissue donation. (2) No, I do not give permission. (3) My loved ones decide. (4) A specific person decides. You can also indicate which organs and tissues may or may not be donated.

The new donor law

Since 1 July 2020, the Organ Donation Act (WOD) applies. Everyone aged 18 and over receives a letter asking them to register a choice. Those who do not make a choice are registered as "no objection". This does not automatically mean your organs will be donated — loved ones are always consulted.

What can you donate?

After death, you can donate organs (kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, small intestine) and tissues (corneas, skin, bone tissue, heart valves, blood vessels). During life, you can donate a kidney or part of the liver.

Common concerns

Doctors always do everything possible to save your life first. Only when brain death has been established does organ donation come into play. Your choice does not affect the medical treatment you receive. An open casket at the funeral is still possible in most cases after donation.
