Choosing Funeral Insurance

2 min read

Funeral insurance covers the costs of a burial or cremation. On average, a funeral in the Netherlands costs between €7,000 and €12,000. Good insurance prevents your loved ones from facing unexpected costs.

What is funeral insurance?

Funeral insurance is a policy that covers (part of) the costs of a funeral. There are different types: in-kind insurance covers services, capital insurance pays out a lump sum, and combined insurance offers both.

Types of funeral insurance

With in-kind insurance, the insurer arranges the funeral. You are insured for services such as the coffin, hearse and care. The advantage is that your loved ones don't have to worry about anything. The disadvantage is that you are tied to the insurer's funeral organization.

With capital insurance, a fixed amount is paid to the bereaved. They can arrange the funeral themselves with a funeral director of their choice. This offers maximum freedom but asks more of your loved ones.

Combined insurance offers both in-kind services and an additional cash amount. This provides the most flexibility.

Tips for choosing

Compare at least three providers. Premiums and conditions vary significantly between insurers. Pay attention not only to the price, but also to the coverage, waiting period and acceptance conditions.

Check if repatriation is included if you regularly stay abroad. Also look at the premium-free age: the sooner you are premium-free, the sooner you stop paying.

Costs and premiums

The monthly premium depends on your age at the time of taking out the policy, the desired coverage amount and the type of insurance. A 30-year-old pays an average of €8–€15 per month, a 50-year-old €15–€30 and a 65-year-old €30–€60.

The sooner you take out funeral insurance, the lower the monthly premium. So start comparing as early as possible.
